Obama Announces Maryland
Co-Chairs and Local Endorsers
Chicago, IL – Senator
Barack Obama today announced that Congressman
Elijah Cummings (MD-D) and Maryland Attorney
General Doug Gansler will
serve as the state co-chairs for his presidential
campaign.
Additionally, Obama released a list of Maryland
elected officials who
have endorsed his candidacy. This group of Marylanders
will focus on
building a grassroots network in the state and
represent the campaign
both nationally and in their home communities.
"I am proud to have the support of this
respected group of Marylanders
and look forward to working with them to change
our politics and
transform our country," said Senator Obama.
Congressman Elijah Cummings represents Maryland's
Seventh District.
For seven consecutive terms, Cummings has worked
to secure our
homeland, provide full funding for No Child
Left Behind and increase
access to college, and promote sound health
care policy. Congressman
Cummings serves on the House Committee on Armed
Services, and is a
senior member of both the House Committee on
Transportation and
Infrastructure and the House Committee on Oversight
and Government
Reform. Cummings, an opponent of the Iraq War
from the beginning,
served in the Maryland House of Delegates for
16 years prior to being
elected to Congress.
"Throughout his career, Barack Obama has
been a leader on ethics
reform and understands that fundamental change
in the way we do
business in Washington is crucial," said
Congressman Cummings, who
serves on the House Committee on Oversight and
Government Reform.
"Barack Obama, who had the judgment to
oppose the Iraq War before it
began, is the one candidate who can turn the
page and restore
American's standing in the world."
Attorney General Doug Gansler
is Maryland's Attorney General.
Gansler, who served as Montgomery County's State
Attorney for eight
years prior to becoming the Maryland Attorney
General, has protected
the public by championing innovative community-oriented
programs to
fight gangs and punish criminals. When elected
for his second term as
Montgomery County's chief prosecutor, Gansler
received the highest
number of votes for any State Attorney in Maryland's
history.
"Barack Obama understands the importance
of bringing entire
communities together to achieve progress,"
Attorney General Gansler
stated. "Through his strong leadership
and sound judgment, Barack
Obama will bring us the real, positive change
we need throughout the
country. I'm proud to lead Maryland and the
rest of the country in
supporting Barack Obama for President of the
United States."
